Kinja'd!!!

So last night I saw a Land Rover Discovery 3 With UK plates underneath the Colorado plates. I dont know how it got here or how its legal, but I saw it. I tried to get a picture but it was late and my potato was blinded by the night and wouldn't focus, so I took a video, you could barely make out the UK plate underneath the colorado plate, you guys will have to believe me but it was badged as a discovery 3 not an LR3.

It's probably driven by some British Old Money spending the summer in Colorado. Foreign tourists can bring their cars with them for a set period of time (a year I think)

First of all why would you want to vacation in colorado for the summer? Second, if that rule exists.... Awesome!

What makes you think the car just arrived?

Tourists bring over their cars if they are spending a long time in the states. My Parents have done it , and a lot of their neighbours in Florida have done it.
Although I don't think my parents ever had a US plate on the car. I was young though.

Unless its a regulation in Colorado, possibly for insurance purposes but its really odd. I just know for my parents , neither of their cars had US plates. To obtain a plate though, it has to be registered and thats impossible. Weird

Easy answer. There are several Brits in Colorado Springs who work at both NORAD and Air Force Space Command, as well as the US Air Force Academy. So, that should solve your mystery. We can bring our US cars to Europe and they can do the same here.

First, no offence, isn't that an Australian car. 'NSW' on the left stands for New South Wales.

My bad, sorry. But to answer, some states require foreign vehicles to have a temporary U.S. licence plate for varying reasons from insurance to merely placing the vehicle on the system should the vehicle come to the authorities attention.

I'm wanting to bring mine across in the next year or so and I'd be awfully pi55ed if someone said I had to put another licence plate over my own. Though I may bring her in via Canada and travel down through Pennsylvania then head across to Washington State.

Ive seen ontario license plates in the states, but canada uses the same alpha-numeric format that the usa uses, so if u have a canadian plate I doubt youd have problems. I wonder if they were required to because europe doesnt use the same format for their plates

Kinja'd!!! Svend > Denver Is Stuck In The 90s

Each European country has it's own alpha-numeric system but I would of thought with Interpol or merely the U.S. and Europol the system for tracking cars would be simple enough. The only requirement for taking a Euro car into another Euro country is the licence plate or tailgate of the vehicle carries a flag or initials of the home country it's registered in.

Kinja'd!!!

Though a British vehicle doesn't have to have the E.U. stars flag like the rest of the E.U. we can have the St. George Cross, St. Andrew's Saltire. St. David's Dragon or the Union Flag.

No federal agency operates on US soil except the fbi and secret service and they dont deal with traffic stuff, thats local PD's jurisdiction

The U.S. system never ceases to amaze me. No offence. Is there no central database for local and national authorities to share data or system to liaise with other nations other than at a federal level?

Ya its called a right to privacy, governmental agencies are not aloud to infringe upon the bill of rights

Kinja'd!!! Svend > Denver Is Stuck In The 90s
05/06/2014 at 03:35

Kinja'd!!!0

Oh, okay. We have a central police national database allowing a police officer to identify a person, the vehicle, insurance, road worthiness as well as any 'markers' that may of been put on the vehicle (ie drug tag, insurance, alcohol, etc...) and each officer is accountable for each request and what purpose. Police authorities can request information from other countries through individuals who are aware of what information can be shared and for what purpose. It helps authorities track down individuals who think they can just cross a border and hide away from detection.

Here police could only do that if you are (or suspected to be) osama bin ladin or if youve been convicted of a felony (slightly more serious than petty crime), so if you have no criminal record or just stole a candy bar from a corner store the government cant find you

Kinja'd!!! Svend > Denver Is Stuck In The 90s

Kinja'd!!!0

Stealing candy is a gateway crime to harder stuff like stealing fizzy drinks. :)

British police see it as 'shoplifting' and some will deal with it at a lower level depending on age or how co-operative the individual was. Most minor ones are ignored (bar a stern word and a warning) but if the situation got violent or resisted arrest then a record almost certainly would be kept.

Kinja'd!!! Denver Is Stuck In The 90s > Svend

Kinja'd!!!0

its shoplifting here too but its not a felony. A felony is stuff like bank robbery, murder, stalking, property damage etc... so if I stalk you, you live in a bank, I steal from you, I kill you and I crash your car... then I'm in trouble

Kinja'd!!! Svend > Denver Is Stuck In The 90s

Lol. Ye', 'felony'/ 'misdemeanour' system. I guess its a system that works. Lord knows ours doesn't seem to. As we also have the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) which looks at whether its in the public interest to prosecute and the likelyhood of a conviction so no matter how hard our officers work, the evidence gleaned through testimonies, cctv footage and even a confession, some idiot will say "not likely to get a conviction, let them off with a warning" which winds me up no end.

Right fella, I'm going to have to head off to bed before I fall asleep at the computer or I sleep in for work tonight (neither are good). Thanks for the info and shooting the breeze with me. Take care.
